Quick summary: Wash a cap according to its care label, using gentle spot cleaning or hand washing when the construction allows it. Reshape the cap and air dry it away from direct heat and sunlight. Check the brim, fabric and decoration before adding water. Do not soak a cardboard brim or assume a cap cage makes machine washing safe.

Check the cap before washing

Read the care label first. The fabric, brim insert, lining and decoration all matter. A washable cotton panel does not make every part of the cap washable.

  • Brush off loose dust with a soft brush.
  • Check for loose stitching or damaged decoration.
  • Remove detachable accessories only if they are designed to come off.
  • Test the cleaning solution on a hidden area for colour transfer.

Older caps and delicate materials

If the brim contains cardboard, avoid soaking it. If you cannot identify an older cap’s construction, use minimal moisture and spot cleaning. Wool, leather, suede and delicate trims need the maker’s specific care instructions.

Spot clean sweat stains and hair-product residue

Start with the sweatband and the parts you touch when adjusting the brim. These areas collect skin oils, sweat and hair products.

Use a soft cloth or sponge with a little diluted mild detergent, where the care instructions permit it. Work gently, then remove detergent with a clean damp cloth. Test any stronger stain treatment first, and keep scrubbing away from printed decoration.

How to hand wash a washable cap

  1. Fill a clean basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent.
  2. Wet the cap only as allowed by its care instructions.
  3. Clean the sweatband and dirty panels gently with a soft cloth or brush.
  4. Use a short soak only if the maker permits soaking.
  5. Rinse gently until detergent is removed.
  6. Pat with a clean towel. Do not twist, wring or crush the brim.

There is no need to scrub a logo as though it is a dirty boot. Repeated hard brushing can damage the surface before the stain is gone.

Can a cap go in the washing machine?

Machine wash only when the care label permits it. Follow the stated temperature and cycle. A laundry bag or suitable cap cage may offer some protection, but it cannot change the cap’s care requirements.

Avoid heavy items that can knock the cap out of shape. Keep it out of the tumble dryer, and do not use a dishwasher as a shortcut.

Drying, reshaping and storing caps

Reshape the damp cap gently. Support the crown with a clean towel or suitable shaper without stretching it. Keep the brim in its intended curve.

Air dry in a ventilated place away from heaters and direct sunlight. Let the sweatband and lining dry fully before wearing or storing the cap. A dry outside can hide a damp band inside.

Store caps somewhere dry, without crushing the crown under other clothing. Spot clean fresh marks between washes. For a cap printed by T Shirts Australia, follow the supplied decoration-care advice as well as the garment label.

Cap washing FAQ

Can I wash a cap in the washing machine?

Machine wash a cap only if its care label allows it. Use the specified cycle and temperature; a cap cage does not make a non-washable brim or decoration safe.

How do I remove sweat stains from a cap?

Start by gently spot cleaning the sweatband with diluted mild detergent, if the care instructions allow it. Test a hidden area first, remove detergent with a clean damp cloth, and air dry completely.

Can I soak a vintage cap?

Do not soak a vintage cap with a cardboard brim or unknown construction. Use minimal moisture for spot cleaning and follow any maker’s instructions available.

How do I dry a cap without shrinking it?

Reshape the cap gently and air dry it away from direct heat and sunlight. Avoid tumble drying and do not stretch the crown over an oversized support.
