How DTF printing works
DTF means direct-to-film. The design is printed onto a carrier film, typically with colour ink and a white backing layer. A compatible adhesive bonds the printed design to the garment during heat application.
In a conventional DTF workflow, adhesive powder is applied to the printed ink and cured before the transfer is pressed onto the garment. The carrier film is peeled away according to the transfer’s instructions. The carrier is not left attached to the shirt.
DTF can suit bold logos, full-colour illustrations, text and personalised designs. It is useful across many suitable fabrics and does not require a separate screen for each artwork colour.
The main trade-off is the printed surface layer. A small chest logo can feel quite different from a large solid rectangle covering much of the front. Heat-sensitive fabrics, coatings and difficult dyes also need consideration.

How DTG printing works
DTG means direct-to-garment. A digital garment printer applies ink directly onto the fabric. Garment preparation, including pretreatment where required, helps the ink perform correctly. The print is then cured.
DTG can reproduce photographs, gradients and detailed illustrations without preparing a physical screen for each colour. Suitable cotton garments are a common choice.
On suitable white shirts, colour artwork can often be printed without a white underbase, giving a light print feel. Dark-shirt DTG generally uses a white underbase so the colours remain visible, and that changes the preparation and feel.
DTG is not restricted to white T-shirts. Its performance depends on the garment, ink system, pretreatment and production settings. The fabric’s surface also influences how clearly fine detail reproduces.

How screen printing works
Screen printing uses mesh screens containing stencils. Ink is pushed through the open areas onto the garment, with separate screens generally used for the ink colours or layers in the prepared design.
Preparing and aligning the screens takes time. Once set up, the same design can be repeated efficiently, which makes screen printing worth comparing for larger matching runs.
Screen printing is not limited to simple artwork. Skilled printers use colour separations and halftones—patterns of small dots—to reproduce shading, photographs and complex illustrations. ScreenPrinting.com’s explanation of spot colour and simulated process printing describes these approaches.
Print feel varies with the ink and technique. Water-based and plastisol systems can produce different results, and screen printing should not automatically be described as thick or stiff. Some suppliers also offer specialist ink effects.
Its setup requirements can be less economical for a one-off design or an order with many individual variations. That is an order-planning consideration, rather than a limit on print quality.

- Other fabrics or requirements: we consider the garment, artwork and selected product before deciding how to produce the order.
These are our production preferences, not universal rules about what each method can do. You generally choose your garment and design, and we select the appropriate process. If a particular print method or finish is essential, discuss it with us before ordering.
Fabric and garment colour matter as much as the method
Cotton and cotton-rich garments
Suitable cotton tees can work well with all three methods. The smoothness, weave, surface fibres and garment finish can influence the result. A method that works well on one cotton tee may not produce an identical finish on another.
Polyester, blends and performance fabrics
DTF is often useful for suitable polyester and blended garments, but it is not automatically safe on every fabric. Heat sensitivity, stretch, coatings and dye migration need consideration.
Dye migration occurs when garment dye moves into the print and changes its appearance. Selecting a compatible process and testing the actual garment matter. Roland’s guidance on DTF and polyester highlights the need to test because fabric dyes react differently.
Screen printing also requires suitable inks and curing conditions for polyester. Some DTG systems support polyester applications, but this depends on the equipment and preparation and should not be assumed for every service.

Which method feels softer and lasts longer?
Print feel
Print feel depends on the amount of material on the fabric, not just the method’s name. DTG without a white underbase can feel very light. DTF creates a bonded surface layer. Screen printing ranges from soft prints to heavier deposits, depending on the ink system and artwork.
A design with open space between its elements generally leaves more fabric uncovered than a large solid panel. If comfort and breathability are priorities, consider the design’s coverage as well as the printing method.
Durability
There is no reliable universal ranking that says one method always lasts longest. Ink and adhesive quality, garment compatibility, preparation, curing or application, and washing all influence durability.
Peeling, cracking or fading can indicate different issues and are not proof that an entire printing method is unsuitable. Compare finished samples where practical and follow the supplied garment and print-care instructions.
For a larger merchandise or uniform order, a sample worn and washed under the intended conditions can provide more useful evidence than a generic wash-count claim.
Choosing for your design and quantity
- One-off gifts and small personalised orders: DTF and DTG are often practical because individual designs do not need separate screen setups.
- Photographs and detailed illustrations: digital methods can be convenient for short runs. Screen printing can also reproduce detailed work with appropriate preparation.
- Large runs of the same logo: compare screen printing with digital production using the same garment and artwork specifications.
- Individual names or changing designs: digital workflows make variations easier, although the order still needs careful organisation.
- Specific spot colours or specialist effects: discuss the requirement with a supplier that offers the relevant ink or transfer system.

Which method is most durable?
